If you’re a person who thinks braces are more of a vanity project, you may be surprised to learn that straightened teeth are about more than looks. In fact, a perfectly aligned smile can offer significant improvements to your oral health. This is because crooked and overlapping teeth create hard-to-reach areas that resist even the most thorough brushing and flossing efforts. Unfortunately, the unintended consequence is tooth decay that may result in cavities, root infections, and eventual tooth loss.

That’s why the Middletown Dental team provides a variety of orthodontic treatments for patients in Middletown, Holmdel, New Monmouth, Belford, Leonardo, Keyport, and Union Beach. Our different approaches may reveal which is the best for you and your family.

Traditional Braces Are Better for Some Conditions

Traditional braces are the most familiar, using metal brackets and wires to move your teeth into their desired positions. However, if you have a malocclusion condition such as a crossbite, overbite, or underbite, we will recommend this method. One requirement is that you’ll visit our Middletown dental office every two to four weeks for adjustments.

One way we minimize the appearance of a stainless steel bracket on each front-facing tooth is by using clear ceramic brackets. These are tooth-colored and blend in with your smile better than metal brackets.

Clear Aligners Are Comfortable and Discrete

Some people still feel that even ceramic brackets are too intrusive. If you feel this way and your alignment issues are less severe, you may benefit from the Invisalign transparent aligner system. This solution works through a series of clear plastic aligners that do the same work as metal brackets and wires by physically moving your teeth to new positions.

We design your aligners to fit snugly, and their unique blend of clear polymers makes them reliably transparent against your teeth. You also may remove them to eat, drink, and while you brush and floss. Most Invisalign treatments last 15 to 18 months, and you likely will visit our office less frequently because you change your aligners every two weeks at home. For patients with certain conditions, Invisalign is more efficient and comfortable for patients regardless of age (teens really like how invisible their aligners truly are).
