Children's Dentistry in Middletown, NJ
Middletown Dental welcomes patients of all ages to the practice, and we especially love to see children. Building a relationship based on trust with your child is one of our goals so they will feel comfortable and even excited to come to their dental appointments. Everyone on our team is dedicated to making their experience at our office exceptional, and you will notice this right away.
The First Visit
Dr. Sukumar likes to begin seeing children for their first appointment around the age of 3 years old, unless parents have concerns early on. At this age, children are typically ready to see the dentist and are interested in the process. Children should be seeing the dentist every six months, just like adults.
We’ll take time to acclimate them to the “big chair,” and show them the tools and instruments we use. We never move forward with any procedure until they are completely comfortable, and we take the time to talk with them about what is happening during their visit.
Extra Services for Children
When your child gets older, Dr. Sukumar may recommend some extra services to protect and build their teeth. Fluoride can help to strengthen developing teeth and remineralize teeth that have been damaged by the bacteria and acids that cause cavities. We recommend fluoride treatments for children at their routine cleaning and checkup appointments.
Dental sealants are a thin coating that we put over the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth in order to protect them from tooth decay and cavities. Sealants are a quick and non-invasive procedure that greatly reduces the number of cavities we see in children.
If your child participates in sports, Dr. Sukumar is happy to recommend the right sports guard to properly protect their teeth and mouth. Many dental emergencies are the result of sports injuries. Protecting their teeth with a customized mouth guard will help reduce accidents, injuries, or trauma.
Orthodontics for Children
Dr. Sukumar offers comprehensive orthodontics at Middletown Dental for children and teens that may benefit from straighter teeth. This means that he’ll be monitoring your child’s oral development and can recommend orthodontic treatment if necessary. He can also monitor your child’s oral hygiene throughout their treatment to ensure that no cavities or other damage occur during braces.
Some children with crowding or complex bite issues may benefit from early orthodontic intervention. By capitalizing on early braces or an appliance and your child’s growth patterns, we may be able to correct many issues and minimize the orthodontic treatment needed in the future.
